Welcome to the Bayville Blog

I was recently asked by the creator and administrator of this website to make some entries to begin dialog on some of the many issues that are facing our community and to make an effort to get the word out that the website exists.

In this entry I'm going to make a list of topics and issues that are ongoing and important to me. Some are long standing issues and others are more current. Some are located within the boundaries of Bayville and others outside, but all directly affect the residents of Bayville.

Over the next several weeks I hope to make more comprehensive entries on as many of these issues as I have time for and invite others to do the same. However, I would like to ask that all entries be responsible and based in fact, or identified as rumor and that they be constructive. Also, while there is nothing wrong with anonymous entries, if you are going to make personal slurs, accusations or character assaults, please sign your name. The administrator of the site has reserved the right to edit or remove any material deemed inappropriate.

The following is my list of topics in no particular order:

Roads - Maintenance, illegal closures and the designation of roads as either public, private or privately maintained.

The Stands - Bayville Amusements, the proposed "medical building", property maintenance and the overall need for revitalization.

Beaches - Access, erosion at Ransom and Center Island, cleanliness and habitat protection.

"The Birches" raw sewerage outflow into the Creek - a decades old problem that was mandated by the DEC to have a functioning packet treatment plant up and running more than a year ago.

Zoning - The need to update current zoning to address over-development and protect environmental resources and a Zoning Board that is willing to uphold them.

St. Gertrude land sale - They are rumored to have sold off a large piece of wooded land to a developer.

Water Supply - The recent contamination by coliform bacteria for the second time that I am aware of.

Mill Neck Bay Marina - This old boat yard was slated for development but is now designated as a NY State Superfund site due to heavy metal and other contamination.

Avalon Bay - After being defeated on their first application to build 300 units on a 5 acre site, Avalon has purchased the property and is expected to submit a slightly downsized version.

Stay Tuned.

    Barry,
I am glad to see you are on here. Your thoughts are very clear and direct. Good luck with this site. I believe that there should be a place where people can discuss the Village, not specific people, in a constructive manner to better Bayville. This site seems to be the answer. I hope it stays on target.

Thank you for putting some really important issues out there for discussion.

People need to be more vocal at the Village level and attend monthly village meetings.

Mayor Siegel and the board of trustees have been very receptive to people who come before them at the meetings with concerns and ideas. They are our elected oficials, we need to let them see and hear our concerns.

    Great work Barry.

    Barry,
This is great forum for our neighbor and concerned citizens of this beautiful community of Bayville. Thank you for creating and administering this blog. I am not sure how to create new dialog on this forum but I am interested in knowing when cable subscribers will begin to have a choice for TV service. Specifically, I am talking about Verizon efforts to obtain franchise licensing in Bayville to compete with Cablevision. In my opinion, sooner is better, because consumers will surely benefit. My understanding is that other Nassau communities already have Verizon Fios TV in addition to the incumbent vendors. Does anyone know why we shouldn't have the same choice in Bayville ASAP? What would be the issues for not negotiating for Verizon service immediately?

      Hi Carmine,

The Verizon FIOS service is available in Bayville. Have you contacted them? Not sure if it is available in all spots. When I went online and entered my phone number on their site, it said not available in your area. When I called them it was avail for my house. Matter of fact, the line terminates outside my house. I'de give them a call. I do know of people using the service today.

Also, thanks for your positive comments about the blog. I think this will be a great way to get up to date info for the area.

a word of caution about Verizon FIOS. My neighbors got it, and the repair trucks kept coming back again and again. They finally swithed back to Optonline for phone and Internet. I've never had a problem with Optonline, and I've used them for phone, Internet and TV for over 3 years. Not sure if FIOS is that trouble free yet, at least here in Bayville.

When my kids were younger we had a pool and other than normal laughter and occasional screams of delight the kids weren't allowed to disturb the peace. If this many neighbors are upset why are these parents not responding. These are the parents who will host the teenage keg parties in the future...what's the term...oh yes, they're called enablers. I haven't seen much activity on this blog...clearly, it is specific to Bayville and vicinity. I believe it can be a valuable and worthwhile forum.

My initial purpose for providing input was to get Verizon FIOS TV allowed to operate here in Bayville. I now have it and have dumped Cablevision (which I feel is an inferior product) and have absolutely no service problem with FIOS- phone, internet and TV.

Has anyone had any feedback from the Nassau County tax assessments challenge/ inquiries?

There isn't much activity on this blog. I know that there are people who read it but don't want to reply for various reasons.

Carmine, as someone who came from a family of Bell Telephone workers, and being a stockholder, I welcomed FIOS.

I have been greatly disappointed with their service. My DVR crashed twice. The first time it took them a week to schedule a repairman. The second time I waited only two days but the repairman was unable to figure out how to get the TV to work in HD mode. I had to rewire everything after he left.

A good friend works in FIOS sales out here in Nassau County and he tells me that people are reverting back to Cablevision because it is cheaper and has better service. Verizon is a company that is poorly managed with the bottom line being sales rather than support.

Today my internet went down and I found calling them was too daunting a task. Turning the modem off did the trick this time. I am glad that I didn't have to deal with the repair number. When my contract is up I'm back to Cablevision.

    Good luck with your FIOS.

Hmmm... interesting stuff, Woody, as I was considering making the switch. I have Cablevision and Optimum Online right now, with Verizon for telephone, so it probably does make sense for me to go for one or the other of the "triple" packages, if I could only decipher the likely hidden charges! It's all rather confusing, really.

FIOS looks attractive but - as you seem to highlight - much of that seems to be in the upfront packaging, advertizing and sales rather than in the delivery. Two personal objections to FIOS:

    1. They push out their "cheap deal" hard but the fact that it is a timelimited contract is in the small print. Nowhere does it indicate what the rate will go up to at the end of the promotion period, either. Plus, there are taxes on top of their offered rate, of course.

    2. One of their people leant over my fence a year or so back and pushed hard to sell me the triple deal. I resisted, wanting to research it all further, only to find out later on the telephone to Verizon that at that time FIOS TV was not available in my part of Bayville. If their own salesmen don't know what's going on, no wonder we have trouble as consumers!

So I'm tempted to leave my money in the Dolan's pocket, I guess.. thanks for your input here.

We use Cablevision for phone, Internet and TV (with two HD DVR's and three more HD boxes). We haven't really needed service much at all, but the few times we had to call Cablevision for Internet or email service issues, the tech service over the phone was superb - beyond what we expected, and totally excellent. We've never had to have a service call to tour house. The only problems we have had with Cablevision was with their HD DVR's. They need to be rebooted periodically, which you do simply by unplugging them for a few minutes and then plugging them back in (the power cord can be unplugged at the back of the unit). One of our DVR's failed totally and we lost some shows that we had recorded. We exchanged it at their Roslyn store for a new one – there’s no charge to replace them since you can only rent them by the month (HD DVR's cost about $10 each, per month). Also, Cablevision did change their HD channel line-up recently, and not for the better. They closed the VOOM HD Network, which had a lot of great programming, and replaced it with more HD Movie channels, mostly HBO channels. We rent movies on Blu-Ray discs from Netflix, so getting more movie channels had no value to us. We miss the programs that they cancelled, but no one else offers them either, so there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Otherwise, Cablevision is fine. We had horrible service problems when we used Verizon for a land-line phone (which we still have as a second line so that we have phone service when there's a power interruption - Internet phones do not work without electricity). Verizon service was so terrible that I would never trust them again for anything. They sent technicians out to our house at least 6 or 7 times and they never really fixed the service. We had to file a formal complaint with the Public Service Commission before we got Verizon’s attention. After we did that some people from higher up started calling and all of a sudden three techs showed up and finally fixed the service. It seems that there must be a war at Verizon between the brass and the union workers, who do a really poor job - probably on purpose - and bad mouth the company to the public. The problem we had was so easy to fix that it's a certainty that they just didn't want to fix it, they wanted to keep coming back and by doing so - stick it to the company. Who would want to be caught in that cross fire? I recommend avoiding Verizon and using Cablevision, even if the Verizon offering might look better on paper. From our vantage point as customers who could not get service from them without filling a legal complaint, Verizon just seems like a very poorly run company.

I've been a Cablevision customer for years. While their prices tend to be ridiculously high, their customer service is unmatched. I called a few months ago on a Sunday when a storm blew my cable line off it's connection on my house. They had a technician there to fix it 3 hours later, on Sunday! My only complaint is that the don't offer the NFL Network because of a disagreement with the NFL over how to charge for the service. Other than that, I really can't complain to much about them.

Verizon has been giving retirement packages to senior people to get them off the payroll for several years. Then they hire outside contractors, Cablevision does the same, but these contractors often cannot deal with older hard wire telephone equipment. I understand that some of the wiring is from the 1950s. Of course Fios is fiber-optic and is supposed to be trouble free.

I'd rather use rabbit ears than give money to the Dolans but, unless Verizon shows some improvement, I'll have to go back to Cablevision.

    Hiya Barry/Jeff

As one who works with computers/web sites myself, I wince every time I see "Refrigerators from Dubai" or some other inane spammer infiltrate your systems and screw up your good intentions. There's no doubt it's a lot quieter around here these days because of having to climb over such a mountain of rubbish just to find the odd gem of wisdom. I do hope you can find the time to revamp the way the Blog is set up i.e. create a new platform, so that you can get rid of these "self-abusers" once and for all. I'm at a loss to understand how they get past your security coding, but then I am a designer, not a coder.

The concept of the Bayville Blog is a sound one, even if it does tend to get hijacked now and again by those with little else to do but complain about somebody or something in the village, rather than coming up with anything positive.

Good luck, anyway. I would like to see it work for you.

I've never forgotten that when I worked at Cunard Line we installed the first "computer room" on QE2 in 1995. I took a walk down on the first day of its operation to check that all was well and passengers were happy. Looking over the shoulder of one of our passengers, I read words to the effect of:

    "Dear (CEO),

We're really unhappy about the way that the tours ... blah blah.... and that the dining room hours don't suit... blah blah... and finding a cockroach on my toothbrush in the morning does not exactly represent the "wonderful holiday experience" you advertize in the brochure."

OK, I made that last bit up... but you get the message. I'm sorry that you've tried so hard with this and that it seems to be attacked so randomly.

I cringe daily when those type of posts make it through and I do try to get into the backend of the blog at least twice a week or so to clean up and block them. As you know these spammers can hit thousands of site with a single keystroke, all within seconds. These "ghost writers" get paid per submission so they are very good at cloaking and getting around the anti-spam efforts. Many spammers change their IP addresses several times a day to confuse anti-spam software. The only way around it (currently) is to validate each comment. I just dont have the bandwith to do that realtime which is needed so thast the thread remains current. If I did that and I dont get in for a day or two, the news is old. Im hoping to get the new platform in place soon. It takes a lot of time to change things over and clean up some of the non-sense on here but it will get done. It is on the top of my "pro bono" list of web projects.

You are doing the Village a service and I wish that more people would participate. I know that there are folks who read postings but will not respond to things they read.

What the Village needs is better communication. The newsletters are chatty but contain little of any substance. Often baseless rumors go around and the Village would do everybody a service by dealing with them in the newsletter.

For example, there is a rumor circulating about what the Bayville Fire Department is going to do with the property they bought. A little blurb from someone in the fire department would go a long way in dispelling the rumor.
