On the Sound - Fish Tales & Marine Madness

I know what your thinking. Why put this out there now that the season is over, right? Well a lot of good fishing is just about to begin and I know there are a lot of you still out there on the weekends.

Use this spot to post your stories on the one that got away and just about anything else going on, in or around the water.

Don't miss the action in the Bay from Turtle Cove all the way around Brickyard Point. Adult bunker are everywhere with huge Bluefish tearing through them! I spoke to one angler who found Stripers in the 30"-34" range in the mix near the Rod & Gun club, they were taken on plugs and live bait. I haven't had a chance to get out yet, but drive to and from work along West Shore Rd. and the activity has been there every day for the last week. I am going out tommorow around 4pm. I'll post my results with pictures...TIGHT LINES!! Capt. Scotty

Got out Wednesday from 5 to 7pm and had to choose which Bunker school to go after...myself and two other buddies each had live bunker on within a minute and just waited for the action.....Actually, was a little slow as there was just so much bait around us. After we pulled a few 10#+ blues out of the schools, we went plugging just before dark between Turtle Cove and Brickyard Point, getting the plugs right up on the eel grass as it was close to high tide. Raised a bunch of fish including what was agreed to be a keeper Striper, but dropped him half way to the boat......Weather not looking too good toward the weekend....We will see...Tight Lines everyone!

Went after them again today in the Bay......same thing as last week....huge schools of adult bunker everywhere...very tough to get a fish to take a bait....I suppose too much bait can be a problem. We had 4 guys on a 17 Whaler, everyone is a pretty good fisherman so even though it was tight, we still were able to work around each other. After an hour and only 1 Bluefish out of the schools we decided to head back around to the Soundside. We got a call from a friend who said there were fish blitzing and birds everywhere in front of Walls Wharf....We'll the call was on the money....for a solid hour, we had 4 fish on at a time...most of them 4 to 6 pounds, somehow I found a nice one that looked over 10 pounds....We all were casting plugs with light action rods, it was a blast!! We were grateful when the fish would spit the hooks close to the boat, since we were releasing everything anyway....Still waiting for the water to cool off so we can get into the Stripers. We had our shirts off all day and after shaving tonight I see I have a nice pair of "raccoon eyes"....Calling in sick tomorrow to spend a glorious October on the water once again!! Tight Lines....Capt. Scotty

This morning around 9am with a nice south breeze on my back I was able to plug a few small Bluefish 2-3# on the soundside in front of the Crescent Club, while hoardes of peanut bunker were getting sprayed all over the place, including right up onto the sand!! At around 4pm I got a call to jump on my buddy's Whaler in the Bay and we ran over to Turtle Cove and started with the surface plugs....My second cast I had a nice schoolie striper 23" or so....Off in the distance we saw a huge school of bunker getting blasted and decided to run over....It was insane!! We had bunker snags on and couldn't even get a bunker back to the boat...The blues wer big...10# plus.....I threw Storm plastics....Bass Assasins, you name it....Everything worked...my arms are aching....

What a blast....I'm actually getting tired of the Bluefish and hope the water cools off soon so we can start chunking the Bass.....TIGHT LINES!! CAPT.SCOTTY

Fished the Turtle Cove area again on Sunday and had no trouble finding the bunker again, only problem was that we'd get blown from the school so quickly, we got fed up with it and anchored at the bridge and fooled around with schoolie Bass on the outgoing tide. Small white bucktails were the most productive....I noticed a post on Noreast.com of another Bayville fisherman who was amongst the boats in the bunker schools at Turtle Cove....he stuck it out on anchor and ended up with a 40" Striper....check out the post and pictures.

Such a nice day yesterday I decided to jump on the Laura Lee out of Captree for Stripers, since the reports have been so good. Got on the 1pm boat and it was bright sunshine and beautiful conditions. Very short ride out to the "West Bar" just west of Jones Inlet "in the rips"....Fishing in only 10ft. of water using Clam Belly's, I ended up with a total of 3 keepers @ 30", 32" and I had the pool fish @ 39" until the very last fish came up next to me by another angler and he edged me out of the pool by a half pound.....I only kept 2 of course, releasing the smallest one. Striped Bass for dinner tonight as I watch the Islanders put a spanking on the pathetic Rangers!!!! TIGHT LINES...CAPT.SCOTTY

    Late Report:

    Sunday 11/10.

    Oak Point. 12-3pm

50+ Bass on Crippled Herrings all about 24"-27", very fat, very nice. Strangely, had a follow up that stayed around the boat for about 15 seconds checking us out.....he/she was at least 36". Occasional 12# Bluefish just for good measure....... Huge clouds of birds, bait everywhere.....Brought a 6 pack of Heineken Light and couldn't even open one until we started heading back, due to the non-stop action....Stopped at the Bridge for 15 minutes on my way in was picking 20" Bass on almost every cast on 1 1/2 oz. White Spro Bucktail. Saw them out there again this am from the beach and felt like saying @#$%^ work!!! But had a busy day scheduled and walked away. I'm hoping to get out again this weekend. Will they be there?

    SAT. 11/17

    9:30 - 1:30pm

10-15 knot winds with pretty regular gusts to 20 and 3-4'ft seas made it wet and a little tough to stay with the fish but we were in and around the birds again today. Had to get a lot closer to mid-sound compared to last week, where we were right off the points.. Lost count of the bass(much smaller than last weekend)must have had 30 or so...And believe it or not we picked another late November Bluefish ...I can't believe they are still around....went around 10#....My machine says surface temp was 53 degrees...I think it's accurate, but I'm not sure...We were the only boat out there...Tried the Bridge on the way in, but it was slack tide and I never do well there without a drift....Let's hope it continues....CAPT. SCOTTY

It was our intention to invite the residents of Murray Street to join us in having the road regraded with new stone. we never talked about asphalt paving. I sadly have to say that there has been no movement because several residents have backed out of the proposal.
Murray Street is included in the Valentine Beach project and is scheduled to receive catch basins. A map showing proposed locations is available at village hall.
Once concern some Locust Avenue residents have is that, because the road has lost so much material, a good storm could expose gas or water mains which are too close to the road surface because of all the erosion.
The folks on East Sope should be commended for the paving. Unfortunately many locals speed along and make driving unsafe.
Speeding in the village is a sparate issue. I once saw a Village pickup truck racing along Mountain Avenue near the school at 8 am. A letter to the mayor about this went unanswered. The speed limit at that time is 15 mph but you wouldn't know it.

    Hey KM,

The reeds that are being cut down are actually Phragmites which is considered an invasive species. I'm pretty sure the work is being done for Mill Neck.
