Bayville Lobster House Fire - 1/13/08

There was a fire at the Bayville Lobster House on Sunday evening resulting in the loss of a historical building in the Bayville Commons built sometime during the turn of the century. Along with the Bayville Fire Company multiple area fire departments responded to the blaze and did an incredible job at protecting the nearby exposures. This was a close one. The entire row of stores on that corner could have easily been lost due to the older type of construction and the proximity of the buildings. Despite the intensity of the fire there were no major injuries. Residents living above the restaurant were taken to the hospital for observation and later released.

The remains of the restaurant are a sad sight. What Bayville doesn't need is another empty lot or abandoned building. The Old Poseidon Restaurant is becoming an eyesore.
Let's hope the owners can get this restaurant rebuilt speedily.
Kudos to the Bayville Fire Department and other responders for saving other buildings.

Thank god, no one was seriously injured. That is a sad sight. I grew up in Bayville and have friends there today.

They need to get a plan for downtown and spur business investment.

I remember the old Pig N Whistle and going there after being at the beach with my family for a hot dog and soda. Bayville is special place.

We don't need office space related business near the beach as I have heard rumored. I think bayvillians will support small retail orientated businesses if the Village created policies and incentives to draw that type of business.

Sorry for the loss of the Lobster House, but I hope they re-build.

we are grateful to the bayville fire dept. that kept the fire under control and not spread to adjacent buildings, job well done.....

I have been told that there is a list of items needed by the families that lost their homes in the fire circulating. As soon as I receive it I will post it for those of you who wish to help. I was also told that right now what is needed most is money to pay the bill at the Tides and to get them into an apartment. We will pass on the information as we receive it.

Should anyone have any information, please pass it on to admin@BayvilleBlog.com

      Barry,
The school has sent home a list of needs, ages of the children and relatives. The Mayors office is coordinating collection of food and clothing, they have appointed people for this. For more info on that I would contact those sources.

However, my sister has visited the family at the Tides and they are in need of money to pay the bill and for daily food and living.

They will be there for a few weeks and Red Cross DOES NOT cover the bill for more than a few days. The family is in three rooms. Space is tight and they do not have a mini fridge or kitchen so food that needs to be prepared would be difficult at this point in time.

As some people who are interested in helping may not have children in the school district, I have provided the info. sent home with the kids today. Two of the women also work at Jones Manor and can be contacted there as well if you would like more specific info. on what they would really like. I know they would take anything, including hand-me-downs. Here is the list sent home today:

Jose Carlos: 36X30 pants, large mens shirt, 8 1/2 mens shoes

Nolbia (mom): size 5 or small pants, medium shirt, size 7 shoes

Carlos (11): size 12-14 shirts and pants, size 6 1/2 shoes

    Teresa (2): size 2T, 7 toddler shoes

Gabriel (6 mnths): size 12-18 months boys, size 5 shoes

Antonio (dad): size medium pants, size medium shirt

Marlen (mom): large shirt and pants, size 7 1/2 shoes

Ashley (2): size 2T, size 6 toddler shoes

Kristy (4 mnths) size 6-9 months

They need immediately: pants, shoes, socks, coats, hats, scarves, gloves, underwear

Other items needed: diapers, formula (enfamil), baby shampoo, wipes, sheets, blankets, strollers, toiletries for the adults

I know both Bayville schools have drop off points for collection as does the High School on both the MS and HS sides.

Please forgive any typos. I was trying to do this quickly to get the info. out there.

    This is such a shame.

Concerned, thanks for posting the list.

Margaret, I'm surprised to hear that the Mayor's office is coordinating donations. I called them yesterday to tell them that I had a bunch of winter coats to donate, and I was told to contact the Hernandez family directly at the Tides.

Local Joe - I don't know about the fire on Bayville Ave., but when a house on 15th Street burned down the community rallied together with donations. How can one help themselves when all has been lost in a fire?

Pat - Newsday says the fire started in the basement.

    Hi Anne,
I read that the Village had appointed
Rev. Leibold to collect clothes and that they (Village Hall)were collecting food.

I do know they had different messages comingout of Village Hall, but that was the word I got yesterday. Sorry if it was wrong.

Pastor Bob Leibold is definitely involved and probably the best person to contact to find out how to help.

This terrible loss should be a wake up call for the Building Inspector - how many more properties in Bayville are at risk? What other nightmares are the volunteer firefighters to face? The building dept in Bayville is long overdue for an overhaul but it will only happen if enough residents speak out.
    my 2 cents
