The proposal is for a two story office building with no apartments units. It will be situated on the existing footprint (I assume on a new foundation rather than re-using the existing). The site is already above the flood plain elevation, so there is no need to elevate it.

The designer has obviously made an effort to make the building more palpable than the standard glass and brick office building. The rendering was more house like with brick on the first story and I believe a Hardy Board horizontal siding on the second floor (someone correct me if I'm wrong - I was in the back of the room).

I had no major issues with the design of the building as presented, but find it a little sad that the economic situation has changed so much over the years that the waterside uses that have existed there for years are no longer viable.

Unfortunately, there is a chicken or the egg phenomenon happening down there. Businesses fail and the properties deteriorate which in turn make the area less desirable to customers and putting more stress on the existing businesses. Add to that the fact that Ransom Beach - the reason for these businesses' existence in the first place- has been allowed to erode away and is no longer a beach, and you have formula for long term failure.

I indicated that I wanted to attend the meeting but the village posting was misleading - I assumed that both items, the Poseidon plan and the enlargement of the amusement park, were tabled until the 25th. Look at the posting on the village website and tell me if it is unclear.
Something needs to be done across from Ransom Beach - the Poseidon is an eyesore and there is no definitive word about the re-opening of Steve's Pier.

It would probably be beneficial to an awful lot of Bayville residents to start a cooperative for obtaining insurance. I'm sure that if everyone who gets notified of their homeowners being raised to ridiculous levels (or terminated) went, as a group, looking for a new company to supply all of their insurance, Bayville residents would save a lot of money.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. It should be bought and kept as open space, it's the only open space in the village, aside from the beaches.

Why don't you start the campaign? In my opinion, the campaign should come from the parishioners, as it is their church that stands to gain/lose financially from the sale.

Sue - Thanks for your referral to New York Central Fire Insurance. I'm going to contact them during the week. With respect to Barry's suggestion of some sort of cooperative effort to obtain insurance, I'm not sure how that would work - although we might be attractive as a large $amount of business to a single company, there definitely are benefits to spreading whatever risks living in Bayville poses among multiple insurance companies. Does anyone reading have experience in this area?

Another indication of how Bayville is deteriorating. There just is no preservation in the mindset of the administration. They'll have to split the property to sell it since it is one tax lot.We don't need more housing do we?
Please post any info as what we might be able to to to thwart this possible development.

I beg to differ regarding your idea that the "administration" doesn't want to preserve land. The fact remains that the land belongs to the church and they may do with it what they please. Rather than throw insults about the administration around, perhaps a more constructive move would be to call the Village and express your desire that the land be left alone. I'm sure that the Mayor would be receptive to anyone calling and voicing their opinion to her. I don't think we need to go and accuse the administration of waiting until news becomes old to "pounce". I'm sure the land would be expensive since it is the Catholic church who is selling it, but perhaps there is a way that it could be done by the Village. Let's not automatically assume what's going to be done. Let's express our opinions and maybe not through petitions either. Petitions to me are not effective enough. Call, write letters, etc.

BTW - There are many other reasons why Bayville is deteriorating and building houses has nothing to do with it.

To all concerned about the Church selling the land.

There is a Village meeting tomorrow Monday February 25th at 7:30 Vilage Hall. Everyone who has concerns about this should go and voice their opposition in person.

This is an administration with 6 trustees and one Mayor. The Trustees do not always know who calls and what they say since they are not full time trustees. Therefore, it is my opinion that the voices of oppostion should not only be laid in a phone call but to the entire board in person or through a letter asked to be read at the VH meeting and entireed into the record/minutes.

Also, any letter sent to VH should be adressed to Maria Alfano-Hardy as well as the Mayor. Maria is the Village clerk and letters received by her are supposed to be saved as a matter of record. It would not hurt to send it certified and to the trustees individually as well.

One last note, the voters of Nassau passed a land trust bond recently. It set aside monies to be spent on preserving the last vestiges of open space. Maybe our MAyor could call Souzzi and purchase the land through this trust. Meyers Farm in Woodbury was purchased through this trust and it was orchestrated ny Judy Jacobs who is a legislator that lives near the farm.

Mayor Siegel is our leader and maybe she can put this movement forward. It would be a win win for everyone, the church, the Mayor and the people.

Being a life time resident of Bayville I find it very sad that every piece of vacant land has been purchased and a home or many homes have been put in it's place. Bayville was a small seaside village in the 50's then it grew a little for summer residents who wanted to stay all year long. Now when you look at Bayville it is loosing it's charm, it is slowly trying to come back but there's a lot of eye-sore empty building lots, vacant buildings, empty store fronts, it's very sad that a cute little town has become so ugly. There are to many people, it's very crowded, people drive to fast on small roads, it's loosing all the charm that made people move here in the first place. Let's try to stop making it look like Queens or Brooklyn, not that I have anything against those places or I would have moved there. The last thing we need is another lot sold and 10 houses taking it's place. I have watched Bayville build West Harbor Drive,Oak Point West and East, Cat Hollow, and Merritt Lane. Let's work on preserving what we have and not ripping it down.

As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor

about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came

across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe.

It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans

are unhappy with the direction the country is headed

and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the

performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the

citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking,

"What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water

    24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air

conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy

    folks have a job?

D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery

store at any time and see more food in moments than

Darfur has seen in the last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and

trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean

without having to present identification papers as we

    move through each state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels

we would find along the way that can provide temporary

    shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with

varying cuisine from around the world is just not good

    enough either.

    H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car,

emergency workers show up and provide services to help

all and even send a helicopter to take you to the

    hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of

    Americans who own a home.

J..You may be upset with knowing that in the

unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained

firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch

equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you,

    your family, and your belongings.

K.Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat

screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer

equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come

to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free

of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the

residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own

    cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious, social and

political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of

    everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and

Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many

cases may have died for your freedom. There is

currently no draft in this country. They didn't have

to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with

either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than

honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a

''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the

    brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds

    of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it

bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news.

Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts.

How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the

    corner?

The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit

corporations. They offer what sells, and when

criticized, try to defend their actions by

'justifying' them in one way or another.

Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J.

Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his

wife, but if he did he would have done it this

    way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York

Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start

being grateful for all we have as a country. There is

exponentially more good than bad. We are among the

most blessed people on Earth and should thank God

several times a day, or at least be thankful and

appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornadoes, fires out

of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms

I am blatantly plagiarizing this from a periodic e-mail that I receive that is jointly sent from the Oyster Bay and East Norwich Civic Associations (I don't think they will mind). Coincidently it contains information on 12 and older teen nights every Tues. and Thurs. in Oyster Bay, similar to what is being discussed on the election thread.

It will post as several comments.

    Barry,

Just a little local history that perhaps you are not familiar with. About 4 years ago, myself, Linda Caroli and Vicki Siegel were directors of a community group called CCSAP, Inc. (Concerned Citizens for Substance Abuse Prevention). Linda in particular worked dilligently to try and establish a BOB-like program here in Bayville. We met with TOB officials, local businesses, the 2nd Precinct and BOB officials. We were making progress when we hit a major wall: the POP police unit that works in connection with BOB got cutback by the county. Due to that cutback, we were unable to proceed any further.

Parents of children in Bayville and Locust Valley should know that the Oyster Bay BOB is open to TOB residents and all well behaved teenagers are welcome.

I was just curious if anyone knew who organized or approved the fireworks display last night on the East End of Town? I've come to expect them on the 4th of July, and make preparations for them, but when you're hit unexpectedly with a barrage at 9:00 on a Tuesday Night in October directly over your house, and you have a sleeping 1 year old and Dogs who flip out over such things, a little advanced warning and respect for others would be appreciated. I would have kept my kid up and extra half hour and saved myself a lot of agrivation.

Concerning fireworks - professional fireworks require permits. I'm not sure which jurisdiction - Village, Town, County or state does the issuing.
So complaints about loudness would have to go to the agency that issued the permit.
